Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Instructor to join the team at Hatt Adventures, based from our outdoor shop in Brighton Marina.

As a Senior team member, you will be involved in developing our Land and Water based activities; whilst having the opportunity to feed into the retail business. The right candidate will operate at a high standard, have an aptitude for developing people and an excellent understanding of health and safety management. This Senior Instructor position would suit someone looking to progress towards Management.

The role includes both administrative and instructional elements along with recruiting, training and developing new staff, and designing new activities and adventures. You will be expected to work on your own and run teams of staff both within the office and in the outdoors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Senior instructor serves as a duty manager. Working on a shift pattern, running the day-to-day operations across the South East and more remote trips throughout the UK.
  • Act as a point of contact for incidents and assist Operations Manager/Director.
  • Support the delivery of training and supervision of junior staff.
  • Assisting in the planning and administration of the operational schedule, such as compiling Event paperwork, staff rotas and updating our CRM System.
  • Diligently meeting Health & Safety legislation and S.O.P’s.
  • Completing equipment inspections and other maintenance tasks.
  • Developing resources and taking responsibility for specific activity areas and programmes.
  • Deliver and lead our portfolio of activities, including adventure skills courses, trips, and corporate events.
  • Supervise the operation of complex charity events, including our permanent operation at the Spinnaker tower in Portsmouth.
  • Work with the Operations Manager to manage the daily schedule of events with groups, activity equipment and Instructors.
  • Support the Retail Manager with the day-to-day running of the retail shop.

Required Skills

You should be a well-qualified outdoor instructor with a strong background in delivering skills courses activities and excellent administrative, communication and computer skills.

Practical SkillS

  • British Canoeing - Paddlesport Instructor / Leader / Level 2 Kayak or higher.
  • Mountain Training - Rock Climbing Instructor or higher.
  • Current logbooks demonstrating experience and currency of qualifications and best practice.
  • First Aid (16hr Outdoor specific).
  • Previous Senior Instructor Experience.
  • Excellent people skills.

Administrative Skills

  • Experience in leading other staff.
  • Great attention to detail.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Skilled in computers (ideally Macs) / internet / emails / word / excel.
  • Excellent communication skills, dealing with customers / corporate clients / booking agents / complaints (not that we get many of these).

Additional Roles

  • Coordinating staff rotas.
  • Staff training / reviews / appraisals.

Holiday

28 days per year.

Pay

£25-28,000 per annum depending on previous experience and qualifications. Pay is reviewed yearly depending on performance and growth of the business.

Hours

40hrs (normally 9-6pm) with 1hr for lunch over 5 days per week (including weekends) . You will also act as ‘duty manager’ on days off.
