Navigating the South Downs in the dark!

Our Night Navigation course is designed to give you a safe environment in which to learn and practise how to navigate at night. This is a skill that is often neglected or overlooked and it's not until your journey becomes slightly longer than anticipated, when you could wander into the early hours of darkness (a lot more possible in winter) or when the mist has rolls in that you realise how important these skills are.

The course is split into 2 sections: Classroom Theory and Practical Skills on the hill. Our course generally starts in lowlight allowing you the time to get your bearings and refresh your map skills, before really refining your compass and pacing skills at night. This is where compass skills really come into their own; you are unlikely to be able to tell where you are just by looking at the map as landmarks may be obscured by darkness and even large, important features that would give you your bearings e.g. mountains and lakes, may not be visible. For this reason, previous knowledge of compass reading is necessary, either from our Intermediate Navigation course or from other previous relevant experience.
